Silicate-based persistent phosphors

Eu2+-doped alkaline-earth silicates are the second most studied group of persistent luminescent inorganic phosphors after aluminates, such as SrAl2O4. Silicates comparable with aluminates in terms chemical stability, high quantum efficiency and large band gap, but offer advantages including better water resistance lower calcination temperature. Their applications range from traditional uses traffic signs, tile decoration or fluorescent lamps to more advanced ones solar cells, LEDs medical field. The highest persistence has been found (Ca,Sr,Ba)3MgSi2O8: Eu2+, Dy3+, Ba4(Si3O8)2: Dy3+ Sr2MgSi2O7: Dy3+. Various synthesis routes have employed obtain crystals these phases, sol-gel, hydrothermal combustion and, commonly, solid-state reaction. preparation silicate glass crystallization not yet widely explored. Here, we review progress made research crystalline phosphors, proposed luminescence mechanisms taking place different methods date, special attention paid phase due its long afterglow emission.
